Rich has some forty years of experience dealing with the US and international taxation of life and property/casualty insurance companies, captives, Blue Cross Blue Shield organizations and health maintenance organizations. Additionally, he has extensive experience dealing with mergers, acquisitions, and rehabilitation transactions having participated in some of the larger insurance acquisitions made over the last 30 plus years. Prior to joining Athene, a Bermuda‐based life insurance holding company, in July, 2014, Rich was a partner with Deloitte Tax LLP. Over his almost 19 year career at Deloitte, he served most, if not all, of the firm’s large insurance company clients and was the leader of Deloitte’s Insurance Tax Practice for some 10 years. Prior to joining Deloitte in December 1995, he held senior tax positions at Aetna, Inc. (formerly Aetna Life & Casualty) and The Paul Revere Insurance Group and spent 12 years with another Big Six accounting firm. He is a frequent speaker at insurance industry conferences, is a past Chairman and President of The Insurance Tax Conference, Inc. and a former member of the Insurance Industry Subgroup of the AICPA’s Financial Services Tax Committee.
